Chapter 10
The cool cloudy days had vanished from the island with the arrival of spring. Harper stepped out of the library and turned her face up to the sky, soaking in the warm sunshine that beat down. It wasnât to the point where it was hot, but the warmth gave her a little pick-me-up.
Smiling, she headed over to Bouncing Beans to get coffee for herself and Reb. Now that she knew there would be an influx of books coming to the library soon, she and Martin had to come up with a plan of where to put them. Of course, it all depended on what the books were. Just because a book was donated didnât mean they could put it on their shelves.
Ever since Hector told her about the books yesterday and Don came looking for a mysterious book, Harper had been a little on edge and very curious. The library didnât have anyone on staffâeither on Marilee Island or the mainlandâthat knew enough about rare books to help.
She was on a raft without a paddle, as her grandmother would say. Grandma Angie would tell her to get off the raft and start swimming.
Harper just didnât know which direction to swim in.
Maybe the answers would be in the bottom of her coffee cup. With Libbyâs coffee, you never knew when you might have an epiphany.
Stepping inside the bustling café, Harper ordered her coffee and went to wait off to the side for it to be ready. She didnât see Libby at the counter, so she must be in the back working on supplies or other business things.
She was so lost in her own little world that she didnât notice someone approach her until they spoke
âLovely to see you again, Miss Lansbury,â Kit said, smiling at her.
âI didnât expect to see you after the wake,â she said, turning to greet him when he pulled her out of her musings.
âReally? I had a feeling I would see you again. Youâre far too interesting to walk away from. So tell me, whatâs a beautiful woman like yourself doing at a café all alone?â
Harper raised an eyebrow. âCoffee break. The library is next door.â
This wasnât her first rodeo. Harper knew he was laying the flirtations on a bit thick. She just didnât know what his reason was. Did he think she knew something? Had he looked into her? Or was there a more sinister edge to it?
She didnât know, but she had the feeling he was more involved than he let on the other day at the wake. After Bernie told her to use her feminine wiles to obtain information, she would use Kitâs flirtation to her advantage.
âSpeaking of getting coffee, how about we get coffee together soon? Tomorrow?â Kit asked, leaning closer to her.
She smiled and said, âIâd like that.â
âShall I meet you here, then? Ten oâclock?â
Harper nodded. âI look forward to it.â
âNot as much as I do, Miss Lansbury,â he murmured in her ear as he passed her by, carrying his own to-go cup of coffee out the door right when the barista set her coffee on the counter.
